14/11/2012     Chiswick Curates

Lot 39

The highlight of our Asian sale on 13th November was the bronze Buddha below.  With an estimate of £8,000 - £12,000 we recognised that it was a good thing - but not that good!

A fine and rare gilt copper hammered four-armed Buddhist figure, 17th/18th century, seated with downcast gaze, having broad chest, the front two hands held together and the two rear hands in Vitarka Mudra; the legs folded in lotus position, with three turquoise beads on the Buddha's forehead, chest and belly, the whole on a pedestal cast with double lotus at the front (height 38cm).
Provenance:  From an English collection. A similar Buddhist figure can be seen at London Christie's 12th July 2005, Lot No. 046: 'Yongle (1360-1424) gilt copper four armed Buddhist figure'.
