§ Lucian Freud (British, 1922-2011) Bella in her Pluto T-shirt 1995 signed with initials and numbered 7/36 in pencil etching on Somerset wove published by Matthew Marks Gallery, New York ARR Dimensions:plate 69 x 60cm Provenance: Archeus Gallery, 2023, London, where acquired by the present owner, with label affixed verso Notes: The sitter for this etching is Lucian Freud’s daughter, Bella Freud. Dedicated to portraiture throughout his career, Freud is best known for his unflinching studies of the human figure, in which flesh, attitude and identity are closely observed. Here, Bella sits languidly in a rattan chair, her relaxed pose and warm, neutral expression contrasting with the intensely worked surface of the etching. Freud builds the image through a dense network of line, carefully describing pattern, shadow, light and texture.
The National Portrait Gallery acquired twelve etchings from the Freud estate in 2024, with an edition of Bella in her Pluto T-Shirt being one most significant . The work demonstrates Freud’s painstaking approach to printmaking. Trial proofs of this edition held at the Victoria and Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery reveal Freud's meticulous methods, as he repeatedly reworked Bella’s face and head before the final plate was completed.
Bella recalled sitting for long periods, repeatedly returning to the same slightly slumped position as Freud worked towards the final composition. Her experience of this process gives the work an additional intimacy, creating for her a bodily memory of the sitting.
“My father spent a long time working on Bella in her Pluto T-shirt, and he reworked my face several times before finalising the etching – it was really unusual for that to happen. And it was quite interesting, in a way, to see that not everything came out right, and how to deal with something when it doesn’t. Sometimes he would ‘scrap’ something, as he called it, and then start again. And this time he just didn’t… Eventually, it was good. I think that’s been a very useful lesson in my work and my life. You don’t give up: you look for a way to see how things can work and then something will come if you’re in that mindset.”Bella Freud
The face is rendered with extraordinary detail, the fine expression of the mouth and eyes captured alongside the subtle shadows defining Bella’s bone structure. The etching is at once powerful and remarkably soft; Freud’s unwavering gaze is evident, yet there is also a tenderness in the image, a sense of the quiet connection between father and daughter. The etching is not simply a study of Bella’s appearance, but an intimate record of looking, sitting and knowing one another.

§ David Hockney O.M. C.H. R.A. (British, 1937-2026) Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book [MCA Tokyo 234] 1980 signed, dated and inscribed AP. LXXXII an artist's proof aside from the edition of 1000 lithograph in colours on Aches mould-made wove printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd, New York, with their blindstamp together with the book Paper Pools , published by Thames & Hudson, London further signed in red ink and numbered AP LXXXII to frontispiece contained within original blue cloth bound slip case, and further paper presentation case unframed ARR Dimensions:sheet 26.7 x 22.9cm; overall 29.5 x 25 x 2.7cm Provenance: Gifted by the artist to a Thames & Hudson Director, thence by descent.
Literature: Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (1996) David Hockney: Prints 1954-1995, Tokyo: Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo & Tankosha Publishing, Reference 234 Notes: In 1978, David Hockney was stopping off in New York en route to California when he was invited by renowned print publisher Ken Tyler to experiment with handmade paper at the Tyler Graphics workshop. Though Hockney was already known for his enthusiasm for new technologies and techniques, he initially approached the process with some hesitation. After seeing works by Ellsworth Kelly and Kenneth Noland, who were already using paper pulp as an artistic medium, Hockney immediately recognised its creative potential. Combining papermaking, painting and printmaking, the technique offered an entirely new way of working directly and with physicality.
Working at Tyler Graphics between August and October 1978, Hockney produced the remarkable Paper Pools series, comprising twenty-nine pressed colour paper pulp pictures. The works focus almost exclusively on Ken Tyler's swimming pool, transforming an everyday subject into a sustained exploration of colour, light and surface. Water had long been one of Hockney's defining motifs, appearing in celebrated paintings including A Bigger Splash (1967) and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972). The Paper Pools series allowed him to reconsider this familiar subject through an entirely new material language.
Published in 1980, the book Paper Pools documents the development of these pioneering works and includes the lithograph Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book . The work is an elegant distillation of the series, capturing Tyler's pool in Hockney's iconic hand. Intimately scaled, the lithograph conveys the quiet geometry and shimmering atmosphere of the swimming pool through the simplest of means. The gently undulating surface of the water is rendered with characteristic rhythmic blue lines, set against the precise grid of the pool tiles. In contrast, the diving board is depicted with remarkable economy in vivid orange, its simplified outline casting a wavering shadow beneath the surface.
The viewer is placed directly at the pool's edge, drawn into the changing patterns of the water. The subtle interplay between line, colour and negative space demonstrates Hockney's exceptional ability to evoke heat, light and movement through a remarkably restrained visual language. More modest in scale than the paper pulp works themselves, the lithograph reveals Hockney at a moment of intense technical experimentation, translating one of his most recognisable subjects through a new project.
