Baron Alexis De La Grange (1825-1917) Ancien Temple Hindu, c.1850s Salted paper print, image size 17.7 x21.4cm, mounted to card, overall measuring 34.4 x54cm, with typed caption, and publisher Blanquart-Evrard credit on lower margin.
Alexis de La Grange’s photographs are some of the earliest surviving images to come out from India in the 19th century. Though a former naval artillery officer, de la Grange traveled to India in a personal capacity in 1849, after finishing his military service. During his two-year trip around south and south-east Asia, he made at least 63 negatives, many of which predate many images made by British photographers who worked in a military capacity.

Subjects include portrait studies of two young women in classical poses, possibly identified as young Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (1820-1904) and Marie Christine Bonaparte (1842-1907); and a portrait of a man sitting in a garden, with manuscript caption 'Professeur de son A.R. Marie Christine'.
The prints in this lot may have formed part of the collection of Mathilde Bonaparte, daughter of Napoleon’s brother, Jérôme Bonaparte, and his second wife, Catharina of Württemberg. Mathilde was initially engaged to her first cousin, the future Napoleon III of France, but the engagement was broken off following his imprisonment. She was educated in the decorative arts and became a talented painter. She was also an important patron of the arts within Paris’s cultural circles. Her passion for acquiring artworks made her one of the rare women collectors of her time.

Mizonutype Cover on an Album of Hand-Coloured & Other Photographs of Japan. Probably from the Bakumatsu-Meiji Period. Probably from the Bakumatsu-Meiji Period as the image of Kamibashi Bridge is thought to date from before 1891. Silver Mizonutype cover image (approx 10 1/2" x 7 1/2") slightly dark and with several stains and marks, front cover almost detached from spine, which is in poor condition. Features 45 images, mostly 26cm x 21cm, from in and around Nikko provence, with a fascinating mix of Japanese scenery, buildings, various ceremonies and Japanese men and women in native dress, many captioned (or numbered in the negative) and the majority delicately hand-coloured. Also several photographs with Westerners posing in Japanese dress, plus images from fancy dress parties and other more formal shots. Military Interest 1900s-1930s An album of approx 100 silver gelatin prints, image size 6 x3.5cm (smallest) to 20.4 x15.3cm (largest), related to the life and family of Sir Frank Arthur Stockdale (1883-1949), including portraits of his daughters Jane and Victoria; portraits of his sons Frank Alleyne and Maurice riding ponies; views of the family house and garden; the family on a trip to the seaside; and hunt scenes with Sir Frank Arthur and his eldest daughter; among others. Housed in sand cloth boards.
Sir Frank Arthur Stockdale was a British agriculturist and colonial agricultural administrator. In 1904 he joined the Imperial Department of Agriculture for the West Indies as a mycologist and lecturer in agricultural science. He then held a series of agricultural posts in Mauritius and Ceylon, where he was the Director of Agriculture between 1916 and 1929 and a member of the Legislative Council from 1921 to 1929.
Together with a group of 10 contact prints related to the Boer War, image size 6.3 x9cm; a silver gelatin print portraying Lieut. Col. George. Julian Selwyn Scovell (1881-1946), image size 17.6 x24.2cm, mounted on card, overall measuring 31.5 x36.4cm, signed by Eric Williams, lower right margin; and 3 additional early silver gelatin prints related to Lieut. Col. Scovell.
Lieut. Col. George J.S. Scovell served in the Boer War and later on the General Staff in WWI. He was later appointed Deputy Director-General of Recruiting, Ministry of National Service, 1917-18.

An interesting album chronicling the missionary activity in Uganad and Rwanda, particularly that of Antonin Guillermain (1861-1896), a Catholic missionary who served as Vicar Apostolic of Northern Nyanza (now Uganda) from January 1895 until his death in July 1896, wih portraits of Guillermain on his voyage, in discussion with local tribal chiefs, as well portraits of local tribes, groups of orphans, women, and and children, mission structures and church construction, local musicians, and one portrait of young boys standing with elephant tusks.

Born in Berlin, Wilhelm Hammerschmidt settled in Egypt around 1860, and established his photographic studio and shop in Cairo. He exhibited ten of his views of Egypt at the Société Française de Photographie in 1861, and later, in 1867, he exhibited his Egyptian costume studies at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He also photographed the Holy Land and Syria.
