Stranover spent most of his career in England, after arriving in c.1703. In London, he initially worked in the studio of his uncle, Jakob Bogdani, who specialised in fruit pieces and decorative works of birds in landscapes. As in Bogdani’s work, many of Stranover’s bird pieces are set in park landscapes with classical buildings and garden features.
The style and overall type of the painting point to its likely execution during the 1720's The work can be compared closely on stylistic and compositional grounds to treatments of subject during this period, the present work reveals a similar spirit and vigour to the brushwork, a comparable treatment of light and composition.
