AFTER PETER PAUL RUBENS (SIEGEN 1577 - ANTWERP 1640)
The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine
oil on panel
51.3 x 37 cm

The present work is after the original by Peter Paul Rubens in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

"The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine" is a subject commonly depicted in Christian art, particularly during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It portrays the mystical union between Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a Christian martyr, and the infant Jesus.

In Rubens' own rendition of "The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine," the scene typically features Saint Catherine kneeling before the infant Jesus, who presents her with a ring symbolising their spiritual union. Often, angels, cherubs, and other celestial figures are depicted surrounding the central figures, creating a sense of divine presence and majesty.
